Affordable, available, and adventure-ready—these are the best places for spontaneous summer travel.

If you haven’t booked your summer travel yet—don’t panic! There are still some fantastic destinations with availability, fewer crowds, and reasonable prices (yes, even in July and August). Whether you're looking to stay closer to home or jet overseas, here are five spots that are still within reach for summer 2025.

1. Maine

For breezy coastal charm, lobster rolls, and harbor views, Maine is a summer classic that often flies under the radar compared to Cape Cod or the Hamptons. Towns in the midcoast like Camden, Rockland, and Boothbay Harbor offer boutique stays, scenic hikes, and that quintessential New England feel—without the sky-high prices of trendier East Coast spots.

2. Oregon

Want cool temps, dramatic scenery, and charming towns? The Oregon Coast delivers. Places like Cannon Beach, Manzanita, and Yachats offer ocean views, forest trails, and plenty of cozy inns. It’s laid-back, less crowded than California’s coast, and perfect for a low-key summer escape.

3. Portugal

While much of Europe gets pricey in summer, Portugal is still a great value. Lisbon and Porto are vibrant and walkable, and you can still find reasonable stays in the Algarve’s beach towns. Bonus: direct flights from several U.S. cities make it easy for a last-minute trip.

4. Guatemala

For a mix of culture, nature, and adventure, Guatemala is a hidden gem. Explore colorful Antigua, relax by Lake Atitlán, or visit Mayan ruins—without the tourist crowds you’ll find in other parts of Central America. Flights are generally well-priced, and many boutique hotels still have availability.

5. Slovenia

Tucked between Italy and Austria, Slovenia is a dreamy mix of alpine beauty and Mediterranean charm. Lake Bled is a must, but consider staying in Ljubljana or the wine country for better availability and value. It’s a great alternative to the more crowded parts of Western Europe.
